David Starks Senior Associate

Areas of Practice:

David Starks, a senior associate of McKinley Irvin, is an aggressive and strategic litigator who focuses his practice on international family law and other complex family law matters, including divorce cases involving the protection, valuation and distribution of significant assets or business interests.

David Starks practices Family Law because, “It’s much more emotionally satisfying to fight for a person than a corporate entity. My clients hire me to fight for them, and that is exactly what I do.”

Focused on complex divorce and family law cases at the trial and appellate level, David’s multifaceted background enables him to represent his clients in cases involving international law and treaties, including the Hague Conventions on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction and the Recovery of Child Support. A veteran of the federal court system, statutes, and processes, David is uniquely qualified for his work in international family law. He says, “These cases move fast and the stakes are very high. You have to come out swinging and you have to do it right.”

An experienced and diligent litigator, David’s commitment to his clients is the commitment of personal investment. “I stay up at night thinking about my clients, refining our strategy. Taking that extra hour, framing that extra argument, ensuring we have all the data necessary to know the case inside and out – this is critical; that’s how I maximize my clients’ ability to win. Whether we’re at the negotiating table or in trial, we’re always ready to go to the mat.”

Beginning his Family Law career as an intern with McKinley Irvin during law school, David returned to Family Law after a post-school hiatus practicing securities law in federal court. “In Family Law, each case makes a difference in someone’s life; you don’t forget that.” David says, “It’s in front of you the whole time. Because of that, you wake up a little earlier than the other guy, work a little later, and you make sure you’ve done everything you can. That’s what Family law is all about. That’s why I practice.”
