Seattle Divorce FAQs

What can I expect when I come in for a meeting?

You will be greeted by a representative at the front desk who will seat you in a private conference room. Our Client Care Coordinator, Yonga, will meet with you to review the details of your case and provide you with information about our firm. You will then be introduced to an attorney and spend approximately one hour reviewing your case. He or she will help you identify your goals and make recommendations for an appropriate action plan.

How long does a divorce take in Seattle?

Seattle area divorces are processed through the King County Courthouse in downtown Seattle. The length of time before a divorce is finalized varies greatly. At the very minimum, there is a 90-day waiting period in Washington that starts on the date the petition requesting a divorce is filed and served. A divorce can be finalized at the conclusion of that 90 day period. Most divorces take longer to process, depending on the complexity of the case and how quickly the parties can reach agreement. Most divorces take between four to eighteen months to be resolved. Your attorney can give you an idea of how long your particular divorce case might take. Read our blog post “How Long Does a Divorce Take” to learn about factors that contribute to the length of a divorce.

How much does it cost to hire a Seattle family law attorney?

Most Seattle attorneys charge a per-hour rate which is billed in fractions of an hour. When retaining an attorney, you typically pay an advance fee deposit (commonly known as a "retainer"), which is deposited into a trust account. Attorney fees are then drawn from the retainer as your case continues and fees and costs are incurred. Learn more about retainers and legal fees in divorce in our Guide to Getting a Divorce in Washington State.

Do I need to be a resident to obtain a divorce in Seattle?

You should file for divorce in the county in Washington where you (or your spouse) currently live. To get a divorce in Washington, at least one spouse needs to be a resident of Washington State or a member of the armed forces stationed in Washington State.
